ABSTRACT

Some physical constraints which can hinder mobility become more frequent with age: in fact, elderly people make fewer longdistance journeys. In this chapter, the effect of age on the number and the nature of the journeys made is analysed. In the study of the elderly population, the age limit has been set at 65, corresponding to the moment when the majority has already retired. Decline in mobility is accentuated after the age of 75, but discriminating factors other than age also exist : income, former occupation, location of residence, and also the nature of the household. These disparities are reflected in opportunities for travel and means to realize them. They also reflect the weight of past habits. Five categories of elderly households can be distinguished: couples living alone, couples living with a younger person, women living alone, women living with a younger person, men (mainly alone).
