ABSTRACT

In this chapter, attention is paid to some effects of two main trends concerning the travel habits and needs of the population in Sweden. The first tendency is the growing number and share of elderly persons in the population. Like most industrialized countries Sweden is in a demographic transition due to reduced birthrates and increased length of life. The chapter explores some issues of distribution related to the mobility of old people in Sweden. It discusses whether the elderly in general travel less than other groups. The chapter explores progressing shifts in the access and use of different means of transportation. It analyzes what factors cause the elderly to reduce their travel activities. Demography is of vital importance for understanding the possible future development of needs and demands in the transport sector. Finally, the chapter discusses the changing mobility patterns and related needs of the elderly that are likely to occur during the next decade.
