ABSTRACT

The research described in this chapter was carried out under contract to the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, Department of Transport. The main objectives of the research were to identify the role of special, accessible transport in the total mobility of disabled people and to begin the process of identifying cross-sector benefits that might arise from the provision of that transport. Detailed home interviews were held with almost 800 disabled people in three areas: Paisley and Renfrew (Glasgow), Doncaster (South Yorkshire) and Haringey (London). One of the arguments advanced in support of providing accessible transport is that it enables disabled people to continue living in their own home rather than in much more costly institutional care. It has been shown earlier that the accessible transport services were only used for a small proportion of all journeys and that, for most activities, the majority of the sample did not go out.
