ABSTRACT

Recognizing the facts, the Transportation Development Centre (TDC) has brought technology to bear on the situation, undertaking the development of Translaid, a portable device designed by Rutenberg Design, that allows agent and passenger to engage in check-in procedure dialogue by means of a computer. This chapter provides a glimpse of this new product while drawing attention to how ergonomics was applied throughout its development to ensure that it would meet the defined need. The description to follow is organized around three sections treating, first, Translaid’s basic development, then the design of its system logic and screen displays and, finally, its operation. The chapter concludes with a brief summary along with comment regarding Translaid’s future role in facilitating transportation for individuals with communication difficulties. The concept for Translaid grew out of the Mark I version of Communicaid, another communication system designed by Rutenberg Design and developed by TDC for use at transportation terminals.
