ABSTRACT

The Mediterranean -minded and super- sensitive Greek family hides the person with special needs in the “back room”, away from community’s sight, because it cannot overcome its guilt complex. The family tries to get rid of the problem, by sending the disabled member to a foundation usually named “asylum”. This seems to be some sort of solution to the problem. The disabled person in this type of relation, reacts in two ways: either by passively accepting his life in the foundation, thus completely with-drawing from society, or by revolting and joining groups and Unions. In this case, he leaves the foundation and is entitled to a special grant for those not in foundations. The other type of relation is the one desired by the civilized world. However, Greece still has a long way to go before accomplishing this, and, now is the time that Europe and International Organizations must stand by and help.
