ABSTRACT

Developing countries naturally place somewhat more emphasis on the elderly pedestrian safety problem than they do on the elderly driver problem. The unfriendliness to the elderly pedestrian that continues to be built into the traffic system – right turns on red, any bridge or tunnel requiring non-grade crossing, the pedestrian barrier fences forcing long detours in the natural walking paths, inappropriate sidewalk and roadway surfaces (rough and slippery) – requires still further engineering effort for increased safety. In the golden word campaign, which used the television, radio and newspapers intensively, 90% of the youth and adults reported hearing about the campaign. The elderly, on the other hand, were less aware, but only slightly so – 79% reported having heard of the campaign. Safety programs, specifically designed and targeted for the elderly, are expensive to prepare and very difficult to deliver.
