ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights some of the recommendations and gives a preview of some aspects for which, as a result of research, more objective advice will be incorporated in the revised guidelines. The guidelines recommend the provision of ramps and dropped kerbs at points where pedestrians have to leave the footway to cross a road. This aids users of wheeled vehicles, particularly wheelchairs of course, which are the most instantly visible group of mobility handicapped people. A classification of mobility handicap groups was used, based on ability to cope with conditions and the type of handicap. A sample of each handicap group was observed as they negotiated sections of route within pedestrianised areas while certain characteristics were assessed. As regards slope, the expected relationship between gradient and difficulty was found to exist, with the lowest level of difficulty experienced with slight downhill gradients.
