ABSTRACT

Most national or territorial park agencies consist of areas of significant natural features and diverse landscapes (e.g. beaches, mountains, wooded areas, swamplands, wildlife, sanctuaries, etc.); and many include historic sites and structures (which can range from large palaces to outhouses to whole settlements). Legislation of the government of Canada states that all government buildings and services must be accessible to all Canadians – including those who have a disability (this includes those who have mobility, hearing, visual and mental disabilities). The Canadian parks service is one heritage agency that is committed to making its facilities and services accessible to all visitors. It is one of the largest parks systems in the world and currently consists of 34 national parks, over 80 major national historic sites. Fortunately, managers in the service have more than accepted the issue as one of compliance with legislation – they have embraced the issue as one of prime importance to the system.
