ABSTRACT

In developing transportation policies and programs, it is important to understand the current barriers to full access and to know the numbers of people who might benefit from proposed changes. The information from the Health and Activity Limitation Survey is currently being correlated with that from the Canadian Health and Disability Survey and the 1986 Population Census – creating a data base of unparalleled information on the number and characteristics of Canadians with disabilities. Canadians with disabilities cannot be treated as a homogeneous group. They are affected by various types and degrees of disability and many have more than one disability. The Health and Activity Limitation survey reports that two-thirds of all disabilities experienced by Canadians 15 years of age and over are related to mobility or body movements. People with disabilities are less likely to be employed, have lower levels of education and generally lower levels of income.
