ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that private motor travel is the best option for disabled and elderly people. Modern technology has made the car easier to drive and safer to use, for both groups. While some severely handicapped persons will always need specially designed cars, the majority will manage with standard models. Modern cars are very easy to use, and many disabled people can now drive without any special adaptions. Even where sophisticated controls are needed their use is simpler than in the past. Today the driver basically only has to steer, accelerate, and brake. Instructors who once only taught those limited by physical handicaps now have clients with brain damage and intellectual disability. Future changes will see a wider range of people become adequate drivers. Voice activated locks and switches will aid the elderly and arthritic motorist. Equally important as safe, strong, easily operated controls, is having correct installation.
