ABSTRACT

The Northern Ireland Council on Disability is a voluntary organisation with charitable status and a limited company. Members of Forum felt that one single nationwide weekly publication should be encouraged to provide a special section for disabled people and their families who wish to buy or sell special mobility equipment. Some of the members of Forum have a Driving Instruction background and they, together with other members, held a Seminar in Derby in October 1 988 to consider further ways of enabling driving instructors working with disabled pupils to share their experiences and increase their knowledge. Although the methods of working vary from centre to centre, there are many things in common and through the regular meetings of Forum much has been achieved. In December 1985 an inaugural meeting of Driving Assessors for disabled drivers representing nine mobility centres all over the United Kingdom was held in Berkshire when the Department of Transport opened their mobility centre at Crowthorne.
