ABSTRACT

A fully modified Ford Escort and 32 foot Ford cargo housing a static assessment rig travel to areas of the UK where there are no similar facilities. In the UK one of the main difficulties for a disabled learner driver is to find a suitably modified car and an experienced instructor. To date 502 people have been assessed; most of them have been car adaptation assessments, but in Yorkshire three local staff, a doctor, psychologist and orthoptist, join the Banstead staff to form a driving ability team to help people whose disability arises as a result of brain damage. The Department of Health asked Banstead Mobility Centre to undertake a study of 1,000 Mobility Allowance recipients to ascertain accurately the frequency of need and to calculate the cost of providing such equipment. Since June 1984 the Ford Motor Company has sponsored a mobile assessment unit manned by a Banstead therapist and driving instructor.
