ABSTRACT

The rate of work trip generation by car per workers is much greater for people younger than 60 years of age than it is for over 60, being 44.3 and 14.1 percent, respectively. The rate of elderly who have drivers’ licenses is increasing with every passing years. In short in the years between 1978 and 1987 in Japan, the number of person who were licensed to drive increased 1.4 times. The human physical functions, such as, eyesight, range of vision, reflexes and judgment are weakened as one becomes aged. As age increases, shopping and social/recreation activities are the main trip purposes rather than work or business trips. And with aging, persons using the car for their transportation mode decrease, while persons walking increase. The rate of going out decreases with aging. However, if the elderly have their own automobiles to be used freely, the rate of going out is much higher regardless of age.
