ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the accident causation measures to examine variations in accident risk with age for a wide range of different crash types. Accident data are subject to reporting biases across accident types and age of driver. The major variable of interest in the following analyses was the numbers of drivers that were primarily responsible for causing an accident. The numbers of at fault drivers involved in the twelve most common types of collision were examined in detail. The changes in the rankings of the five accident types across age groups can be seen in this figure. The data for accident types where the causal factors and shapes of the functions were similar were aggregated. However, it was demonstrated that for all accident types combined drivers aged 65 and over were much more likely to have caused a crash than drivers in any other age group.
