ABSTRACT

Research both in Britain and elsewhere has shown that the detailed design of a number of features on buses can have a large effect on the ease and safety with which elderly and ambulant disabled people can use buses. This chapter describes the information which is available and indicates how bus entrances, exits and internal accommodation should be designed to assist passengers with mobility handicaps. It costs little or nothing to specify these features to assist passengers with mobility handicaps when new buses are being ordered, and the cost of retrospective modifications is quite modest. Some findings on design features are based on the experience of large operators such as London Regional Transport and South Yorkshire PTE, and have been described only in unpublished documents. In particular it covers the design of entrances and exits, of gangways and stanchions, of seats and other aspects of internal arrangements.
