ABSTRACT

People with handicaps do not have the same possibilities of travelling about that the people have due to the difficulties they encounter in dealing with public transport, principally because of their reduced functions. This chapter discusses the process of developing vehicles and shows how requirements and demands from disabled people can be incorporated into the process of vehicle design. The sequence of movements made by the passengers in the vehicle should be analysed. Included in this work are costing, construction, manufacturing and testing. Seats that are especially designed for the ambulant disabled should be situated near the entrance which has been adapted to be used by disabled passengers. The wheelchair area is to be situated so that extra manoeuvring space is provided, e.g. the area should be situated near an entrance or the central gangway. Securing mechanisms should be provided to hold the wheelchair securely during various movements of the vehicle and in the event of accidents.
