ABSTRACT

In London there are six borough-wide Community Transport schemes offering Group Transport and Dial-A-Ride services. Community Transport provides a professional service to its users in terms of access to maintenance and repair facilities; knowledge and awareness of legal requirements of operating vehicles, e.g. Minibus Permits, with a particular emphasis being placed on driver training and passenger safety and awareness. The situation is, however, changing as more and more Outer London boroughs, predominantly under Conservative control, with populations more wealthy, yet more scattered, often with an unmet transport need, recognize the value for money that Community Transport offers user and funding body alike. The Community Transport schemes currently in operation in London vary considerably from one another in terms of size of project and resources available. Sponsorship deals with local supermarkets have been proved to be particularly interesting new initiatives.
