ABSTRACT

Accurate measurements of height and the calculation of height velocity should be determined in children of short stature together with the mid-parental height centile. Non-endocrine causes of short stature include chromosomal, genetic and intra-uterine abnormalities. Following birth, emotional deprivation is an important factor in short stature but nutritional causes and disorders of the gut and the kidneys should be considered.

Hypothyroidism and Cushings syndrome together with excess steroid dosage for systemic disorders should also be considered together with the possibility of growth hormone deficiency.
