ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to present a survey of contemporary music written for the shakuhachi by Japanese composers since the end of the Second World War. Just to convey the breath of contemporary shakuhachi music being composed in Japan, various examples representative of chamber pieces for unconventional combinations of Japanese, or Japanese and Western instruments, have also been included. the reader should be reminded of the lists of shakuhachi music by European and American composers included in the two articles by Y. Iwamoto and R. Samuelson in the issue. In a very few cases, although the entries were checked by the composers and accordingly no asterisk is attached to their names, full information could not be provided, since the composers could not complete it themselves.
