ABSTRACT

Although numerous studies throughout the past century have explored the effects of music on a variety of physiological responses, comprehensive reviews of these investigations have demonstrated that little has been established regarding such phenomena (Dainow, 1977; Hodges, 1980). Hodges analysed existing research findings with respect to whether music which was categorised as stimulating or sedative according to Gaston's (1951) definitions influenced various physiological parameters in a predictable manner. Hodges discovered that research findings were inconsistent and concluded that while music does appear to influence physiological responses ‘the data do not show clear support for the nature of this influence’ (p. 396).
