ABSTRACT

"The Second Viennese School" in Moscow? During all the Soviet years "socialist realism" ruling in Russian music has been fighting against the Second Viennese School and its founders Schoenberg and Webern. Their compositions were neither performed, nor published, nor studied. Yet, paradoxically enough, in the course of 47 years there lived and worked in Russia an adherent of the Second Viennese School, a remarkable person, a theoretician of music, composer and pedagogue — Philip Moiseyevich Gershkovich. A man who has traversed the roads of three countries, all his life striving for his cherished goal — to get down to the essence of music.
