ABSTRACT
Valentin Vasilyevich Silvestrov was born on September 30, 1937 in Kiev (Ukraine). He started his musical training in 1952, first by taking private lessons and then attending the evening music courses for adults, coynpleting them in 1958. Upon graduating from a higher school as a civil engineer, he entered the Kiev Conservatoire in 1958, where he studied composition with Boris Lyatoshinsky. Upon graduation from the conservatoire, from 1963 to 1970, he taught music in the elementary music schools of Kiev. The composer lives in Kiev together with his wife, a musicologist by education, and their married daughter and her two children.
