ABSTRACT

This contribution is concerned with the acquisition or non-acquisition of the traditional Frisian diminutive formation system among Frisian and Dutch primary school children. Among Frisian children, an imperfect acquisition of the diminutive formation system may signal a process of language loss of the minority language. A mounting degree of language contact between the linguistically related varieties Frisian and Dutch might undermine the structural integrity of Frisian. Focusing on the suffixation paradigm, this study explores how and to what extent this happens.
