ABSTRACT
This article is an attempt to link various literatures: those on sociolinguistics, social conflict, ethnic mobilization and regional science. These literatures are embedded in a wide variety of academic disciplines, including linguistics, sociology, political science and geography, as well as several hybrid subdisciplines. The purpose is to set some broad sociological parameters for the study of minority language maintenance and/or loss in advanced industrial societies.
