ABSTRACT

Since April 1, 1997, Syracuse Language Systems has been offering a World Wide Web course in beginning Spanish that combines distance learning and computer-aided language learning by providing one-on-one interaction with a trained instructor via the internet, internet-mediated communication with native speakers not necessarily trained in language instruction, traditional lesson-based study of language structure using random-access multimedia lessons, extensive practice in the spoken language through a variety of multimedia games and comic-strip style conversations, and human-computer interaction in the new language using powerful new speech analysis technologies. The nominal course duration is three months, though the individual student can work at a slower or faster pace than that recommended.
