ABSTRACT

In the eyes of those who are struggling for ethnic revival, linguistic revitalisation and language maintenance, Faroese may be said to be a success story. With no written language until about a century and a half ago, today Faroese can be considered a full-fledged national language. Thus, the focus of this paper is on how the Faroese language overcame the threatened situation of being an oral language only, and was revitalised, cultivated and is in the process of ongoing development.
