ABSTRACT

“Public nutrition” deals with the nutrition problems of populations and the public policies and programs to address them (Mason et al. 1996; Eide and Oshaug 1997; Rogers and Schlossman 1997). This chapter suggests opportunities for practitioners working on public nutrition issues from their positions at the development summit. 2 These opportunities are inspired by an interpretation of the different analyses of conditions associated with success in improving nutrition (Miller and Drake 1980; UNICEF 1990; Jennings et al. 1991; Jonsson 1995; Gillespie et al. 1996) in light of the author’s experience both at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and in the debate on the needs of nutrition research and training which followed a related conference held in Bellagio, Italy, in 1994.
