ABSTRACT

Hearth programs 1 seek to improve the health and nutritional status of preschool children by working closely with mothers with knowledge of child care and locally available foods. This chapter describes and evaluates the Hearth program developed at the Hopital Albert Schweitzer (HAS) in Deschapelles, Haiti. The HAS Hearth program initiates the rehabilitation of malnourished children during two weeks of intensive feeding, and in so doing also educates and motivates the mothers to continue the appropriate feeding. It also motivates the network of Hearth volunteer mothers to engage in other community health activities with HAS.
