ABSTRACT

From the mid-1880s almost until the end of his career, Gabriel Fauré undertook the composition of music for the theatre. The genre of incidental music in particular appealed to Fauré. As he explained in an article in Le Figaro in 1907,

… it is content to comment on the action, to recall the characters’ feelings and amplify their expression, to … bring to life the forces of nature which surround the characters and act so powerfully upon them, … imbuing a literary work with a lyricism and a musical atmosphere. 1
