ABSTRACT

ALONGSIDE FRANZ WICKHOFF THE FIGURE of a notable scholar appears and disappears, “like a shooting star,” his career lasting little more than a decade, his character, background, and development being quite unlike that of Wickhoff. Despite this he was able to give the Vienna School an entirely fresh impetus, even though he was never to become head of any of the teaching staff of the time. Indeed, in one specific direction he had a greater effect than those who actually founded the school or those involved in its reconstitution.
