ABSTRACT

Southampton University has long cherished its contacts with teachers in the region. By mid-1988 teachers in the local sixth form colleges (catering for students aged 16-19) were alerted to the possibilities offered by the 'packages' being developed by the HiDES Project. Their enthusiasm was charged by the opportunity to take advantage of current technology to teach the traditional skills of document analysis in a way which would well command such resources as were available. It was heightened by the opportunity offered by the History Department at the University of Southampton for a teacher to work in tandem with a member of its staff to develop a 'HiDES package' which would stimulate discussion and debate in the classroom.
