ABSTRACT

‘Darwinism’ refers to the scientific argument that evolution can be explained by natural processes and that Darwin’s theory of natural selection is the main mechanism of adaptive change. After decades of controversy about the role of natural selection as a creative force, modern Darwinism was consolidated in a group of treatises published from the mid-1980s to the 1950s. These established what is called the ‘modern synthesis’ in evolutionary theory, also referred to as ‘neo-Darwinism.’
