ABSTRACT

Sayyid Qutb was the Muslim Brotherhood's main ideologue between about 1951 and 1966. His major contribution to modern Islamic thought was his elaboration of Maududi's view of the modern world as jahili. By refining Maududi's redefinition of this term, pointing out its validity, and opposing modern society to Islam, Qutb provided the Islamist movement with a clear goal towards which to work. His thought has been a major inspiration for many of the Islamic movements that we see today in the Sunni world.
