ABSTRACT
In teaching, we find that the best way to impart new knowledge and new or expanded ways of thinking is to relate the unfamiliar to the familiar. That is, we start with something a person already knows or has experienced and go on from there. Sometimes drawing analogies helps. Accordingly, in presenting my “transition” theme, I shall start by drawing parallels between individual growth, which we all experience, and the development of natural communities and human societies.
