ABSTRACT
Explanation. In past years, we heard a lot about the “balance of nature” and how such and such might “upset” this balance. We now understand that, while there are very important balances in nature, such as the balance between atmospheric oxygen and carbon dioxide that has persisted for aeons, there is no such thing as a central control device (like a thermostat) that keeps nature as a whole in equilibrium.
