ABSTRACT

To some extent, Socrates can be traced in Kant, just as the Samian Hera can in Laurens’ Amphion. In his contention with the emotional factor, the practical man has always met with defeat. He became frayed, like his shirt, though made of gold, at the very moment that the other one, though stark naked, felt himself being transformed into something irreplaceable. Which is how Art came about: to give being to that part of them which, from the moment it existed as such, can never exist as such again. From this point of view, the entire history of art is but a parallel to the history of events, minus the element of decay. All the rules that apply to painting also apply to Collages. The yellows and blacks at some point of the picture must find their correspondence at some other. The verticals and horizontals must balance.
