ABSTRACT

Caspersen joined Ballett Frankfurt in 1987. She has collaborated extensively with William Forsythe as a dancer, actress, text author, and choreographer, as well as creating her own pieces for the company. She illuminates the dancers’ training and the process by which William Forsythe produces work in collaboration with his company. The grounding of Forsythe’s method in Rudolf Laban’s Space Harmony work is indicated, and its development beyond Laban demonstrated with numerous examples of the operations used by Forsythe and the dancers to generate or modify movement material. Works discussed include Artifact (1984), Of Any If And (1995), Loss of Small Detail (1991), ALIE/N A(C)TION (1992), Eidos: Telos (1995), and Sleepers Guts (1996).
