ABSTRACT

The process of creating Tight Roaring Circle, a 1997 Artangel installation at The Roundhouse in London by Dana Caspersen, William Forsythe, and Joel Ryan, demonstrates their interest in working collaboratively and the issues it raises of authorship, disciplinary boundaries, and autonomy. In this instance the collaboration occurred not just among the credited creators, but with the curators and audience as well. While ostensibly light-hearted, Tight Roaring Circle was also a further exploration of engendering, ordering, and composing movement, issues also being pursued at Ballett Frankfurt, where Caspersen is a dancer and choreographer and for which Ryan often writes music.
