ABSTRACT

Matthew Holden's form of external politics has two sub-types: constitutional opposition and moral opposition. Marable, M. calls for a "new Black leadership" and advances a rather ambiguous vision of black politics that calls for structural transformation through inclusionist means. Holden makes the differences between the types rather clear when he writes: "withdrawal is different from both clientage and opposition in the sense that it does not accept the inescapability of the Black-White connection. Holden further divides withdrawal into three separate varieties: genuine separatism, tactical withdrawal, and value withdrawal. It is perhaps prophetic that Holden considered the possibility of the Republican Party forming a majority coalition with appeals to race as a major component in the glue that kept the coalition together. The prophetic accuracy of Holden's consideration of the Republican party constructing an "antiblack" majority coalition can be seen in the observations of Edsall and Edsall.
