ABSTRACT

The role of chromosome cytology in primate evolution is reviewed and discussed thoroughly by E. H. Y. Chu and M. A. Bender. The chromosomes have been divided according to their morphological characteristics, that is, size and centromere position, into several groups. These groups are somewhat arbitrary but an attempt was made to be consistent within groups. In the case of some chromosomes difficulty is encountered in placing them in a particular group. However, the error which may have been incurred would not alter the findings and in particular the conclusions significantly. Since most is known about human chromosomes leading authorities will compare those of the other Hominoidea with them. The striking resemblance of the chromosomes of man, chimpanzee and gorilla strongly suggests a close evolutionary relationship. The orangutan seems to be less closely related to man.
