ABSTRACT

This chapter defines microphilanthropy as philanthropy efforts that are started and run by individuals who are not affiliated with the government. The emergence and widespread success of microphilanthropy is changing how philanthropy works in China. Due to its cumulative power and influence, microphilanthropy is able to contribute to solutions for some big Environment issues. Essentially, philanthropy refers to an altruistic cause or action that puts the interests of others and benefit of society over the interests of oneself. Individual-action microphilanthropy refers to philanthropic actions that are initiated and completed by one individual, without participation by others, and are unorganized and singular in focus. Collective-action microphilanthropy refers to philanthropic actions that are initiated by an individual, involve the participation of other individuals, have a low level of organization, and are multiple in focus. Social-movement microphilanthropy refers to philanthropic actions that are initiated by multiple individuals, receive wide participation from public, are highly organized, have multiple goals, and aim for longterm impacts.
