ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses recent developments in charitable donations in China. While maintaining a steady growth in overall amount, charitable donations in China began to show some new patterns in 2011. Although large donations were common in 2011, it still attracted a great deal of attention when Dewang Cao donated his shares in Fuyao Group to the Heren Foundation. In addition to the astonishingly large amount of this donation, the foundation itself garnered attention because it was the first Chinese foundation to receive a donation in the form of equity. In 2011, donations of more than ¥1 million were common from both state-owned enterprises and private enterprises, and donations of even more than ¥10 million sometimes occurred. Actually, the top-10 enterprises were from monopoly industries, and eight of them were in energy and electricity industries. China is in the process of establishing national standards of corporate social responsibility.
