ABSTRACT

The media have an unequaled opportunity to make a critical difference in social policy construction. If the media were doing a good job at informing people of the magnitude of problems children face, there would be such an outcry that they would see immediate change. Child abuse is one example. Some children's issues have been covered better in the last 10 years. Reporters, many of them women, have done a good job on child care and family leave. A reason for kids not to watch newscasts and read newspapers is that they are almost entirely targeted to adults. Kids use their imagination when they listen to radio in a way that is not required when they watch TV. New Youth Connection (NYC) is a serious newspaper. Important teen issues are covered such as parental abuse, worry about street violence, choosing to stay a virgin, and trying to raise money for college.
