ABSTRACT

The American public library has been going through a transformative moment, albeit a long transformative moment. Many American public libraries have been transformed from a finite space with finite resources to a finite space with infinite resources. Public libraries are always going to be about people—the connection of people to resources, the connection of people to technology, the connection of people to people. Public libraries need leaders who can passionately and forcefully articulate a vision for the future coupled with a cogent assessment of the critical factors that American public libraries must now confront if they are to have a successful future. Library buildings and the technologies employed by libraries must be constantly upgraded. Wiring, electrical connections and power, telecommunication services, hardware, software, and peripherals are keys to the transformation of the American public library. Professional librarians understood bibliographical resources, reference sources, collection management, and information referrals.
