ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book not only shows a variety of ways the study of anti-racism as discourse contributes to international studies, but also facilitates the scrutiny of anti-racism discourse via more methods than discourse analysis. One key point made in the book is that media campaigns based on such definitions of racism are actually missing the point. Jairo Lugo-Ocando begins by challenging the traditional definition of "campaigns". His fieldwork in Scotland revealed that it can be very myopic to think of campaigns as planned, organized activities by specific entities. The book seeks to show the relevance of anti-racist discourse to the intellectual interrogation of key problems in contemporary international politics, especially terrorism and anti-terrorism, ethnic conflict, post-war reconstruction, neo-liberalism, and war propaganda.
