ABSTRACT

Cooperative learning is a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. A mixed methods approach is best qualified to identify other variables and nuances that may moderate the relationship between the learning styles of black males, their teachers' teaching styles, and academic achievement levels. In the case of the present study, the learning of black males must be looked at within the context of the unique culture and experiences of being a person of African descent in the American context. The notion of cooperative learning is related to the cultural deep structural aspect of African Culture identified from an Afrocentric perspective as African axiology. Specifically, African axiology is defined by the ideal of harmony with nature cooperation and communalism.
