ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a description of the 1890 land-grant universities' involvement in international development activities, undertaken cooperatively with the Agency for International Development (AID). It also provides insight into the broader spectrum of international involvement by the 1890 land-grant universities. By offering opportunities for involvement in overseas development activities, the considerable but largely untapped expertise of historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) would become better known to officials in developing countries and in AID Missions. It should perhaps be noted that over the years the historically black land-grant universities have participated in development activities sponsored and funded by other organizations. Historically, 1890 institutions and other HBCUs have played an important role in training manpower from many of the less developed countries. The basic strategy of AID in initiating a Research Grant program for HBCUs has been to expand opportunities for their participation in international technical cooperation programs of the United States government.
