ABSTRACT

Music therapists Sunelle Fouche and Kerryn Torrance are in front, planning their day's work, and the author look at the muddy road alongside the motorway; the tin shacks, the skinny stray dog drinking out of a puddle of water, and the low grey clouds that only just enable to see Table Mountain, now far away. Their Music for Life programme is part of the voluntary or NGO-funded "caring industry," and always at risk of having to be stopped because of shortage of funds. The music therapists tell of how this event galvanized everyone: it brought together gangsters who not only helped to set up the chairs in the afternoon of the concert, but also asked whether they could take part. Kerryn and Sunelle are practicing a song at the piano, and author's eye is drawn to a poster on the notice board, with Choir Rules.
