ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the sometimes paradoxical aspects of performing with vulnerable people in sensitive circumstances. It seeks to build up a picture of "how performing helps" by looking at these two case examples in relation to developing multi-disciplinary theoretical perspectives on performance – in particular on "musicing-as-performing" and its potential for personal and social transformation. The chapter considers the potential professional and ethical dilemmas associated with performance practices within music therapy. It presents the synchronic axis of performance: the in-the-moment constellations of experience that are so powerful for performers and audience alike. The members of Musical Minds engage with their music primarily for its own sake: to get it as right as possible, to make their shared performance a quality event. Sarah, as the professional facilitator of the group, works hard with a skilled and subtle behind-the-scenes support, which seems crucial to the performance event being a success.
