ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies some characteristics of Scienciness constructs, together with some procedural and systemic recommendations for the avoidance of its worse excesses. Policy transfer in sport seems to have the character of a sort of role modelling, in which certain nations that are judged to be successful, whether absolutely, or relative to their size or resources, are selected as the target for an often uncritical reproduction in the home environment. Given the scope and expense of Scienciness-induced errors, it would seem worthwhile considering why these mistakes occur and how decision-making on future initiatives may be strengthened. The talent identification and development process, if led in an inclusive and evidence-based manner, has the potential to make significant contributions to a number of levels of participation and performance. The potential for waste through duplication is comparatively small compared to the 'Type 2 error' associated with talent identification and development and its related constructs.
